Talent. Instruction. Determination. Success. NSD does it best.
Every summer we are excited by the opportunity to teach so much bright, upcoming talent. We believe that in every high school debater, there is a champion. Our job is to do what we can to provide instruction that takes that raw talent and turns it into success.
Our Curriculum Puts the Student First
Every summer we are excited by the opportunity to teach so much bright, upcoming talent. We believe that in every high school debater, there is a champion. Our job is to do what we can is to provide instruction that takes that raw talent and turns it into success. Our curriculum ensures that students get the most personalized instruction possible. Our mentorship programs give students 1 on 1 time with a mentor throughout their experience at camp. Most camps put their students into massive lecture halls for essential lectures. We believe that's ineffective. NSD changed debate instruction forever by introducing "rotations," which are small and focuses lecture series that give the content of large lectures with an adaptive curriculum for students at every level.
We believe that despite skill level, every student who is passionate and driven to succeed deserves the same attention as next year's stars. Some camps put lab leaders together in high labs based purely on competitive success, not teaching ability and their strengths. At NSD, despite skill level, students are guaranteed instruction by successful coaches and competitors. Last year, in our two lowest level labs, all three senior staff had coached TOC qualifiers, two instructors were in out rounds of the TOC, and one was even the 2016 NCFL National Champion.
Our Staff is Unmatched in its Dedication
NSD's Leadership of Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum, and Congress Coaches has over 70 years of coaching experience between them.
Our curriculum is designed by both very successful debate coaches and people with classroom teaching experience. Our senior staff have coached champions or finalists at NSDA Nationals, the Tournament of Champions, the National Catholic Forensics League, Harvard, Yale, and Stanford to name just a few. They are passionate instructors, vetted coaches, and school teachers. Our leadership has years of classroom teaching, pursuits in higher education, and experience in working with students of all skill levels. Our leadership's experience and the success within those years have no match.
Further, NSD's First Year Out Staff are successful at the most competitive tournaments in the country before teaching at NSD. Our curriculum works. Year after year our students are in outrounds of every major tournament across the country including at Yale, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, UT Austin, UPenn, and the list goes on. If you see out round results for any major tournament, there will be NSD alumni competing and NSD staff and coaches judging. Our first year out staff have been in outrounds of the TOC as juniors in high school, qualified to the TOC multiple times, won tournaments (UT Austin and the University of Houston to just name two from the last 30 days), and the season isn't even over. We love to boast about our staff, but ultimately we choose these staff because our staff is as passionate about debate as our very best students are
A Comprehensive Curriculum
Over the past decade we have seen that the arguments that are popular fluctuate greatly year to year. At NSD, we believe that it is our job to provide instructors to answer those current trends, but also instructors who can begin new trends. Our staff are experts in philosophy, political theory, sociology, policy analysis, etc. We believe that every student should have the opportunity to discover the part of debate that they are passionate about. Because of that, we differ from camps who group students based on their already decided interests. We believe that many students do not know what they want to do, and so we balance lab leaders with people that have different types of expertise to meet every student's needs.
